What a personal touch can do for your business
Yes, I will be considered a year older in a matter of days and it is reason for reflection.
The past year has been a learning curve and one that has been both exciting and rewarding, yet emotionally draining. I have to say that in the past year, I have learned more about business, life and people than I have ever done so before and with that comes an inner strength to move forward into a new year and with knowledge and retrospect that will hopefully see more of my dreams fulfilled and less angst on things that don't matter.
Yesterday, the most beautiful thing happened. In a matter of hours, I received two parcels. One from my mother, which was beautiful. Inside were gifts for my birthday that I know I will love and treasure. She always thinks of things that are timeless and that I can keep for years.
The second was from my Sister-in-law and my brother, and it is a charcoal that she finished some months ago and exhibited in her sold-out collection. I loved the picture from the moment I layed eyes on it. It is also timeless, with a surreal beauty that someone who loves art like I do would certainly appreciate.
After dining with a friend last night, who is from overseas, I received my third gift. I have been a writer since I was five years old, and it was the first time someone had ever thought to give me a pen. The Graf Von Faber-Castell Fountain Pen and blue ink is something that I will treasure forever, but more than that, I am overwhelmed with the thought behind it. It is something I know I will treasure always and use to write to people that I wish to connect with.
It reminds me of how important it is to think about people on a more personal level. When was the last time you wrote a handwritten letter to someone? More precisely, when was the last time you wrote a handwritten letter to a client? Or told a client what they mean to you and your business.
There is something about handwritten letters that make them special. They are something to be kept and treasured. They cut through the clutter of mail and tell the receiver that someone cares enough to put pen to paper and personally write something to you.
Food for thought.

28 Aug 2012Hi Mellissah,
ReplyIt is nice receiving gifts from the people we love. They always seem to know about those little things we love and cherish. A hand written letter is a special touch and says so much more than the words written. When my grandmother was alive I would try to write as many as I could, she really appreciated them.
As for communicating with clients, hand written letters can really demonstrate to the client exactly how much they mean to an organisation. As I mentioned before, I feel that hand written letters say so much more than the words written.

27 Aug 2012Melissa, you are a writer and you know how to express something that some may find so simple and turn it into something meaningful and beautiful. I always say to others that I should have been born in the 50s. I love traditional ways and I sometimes prefer an original way of communicating then the now technological way. A handwritten letter is like receiving a love letter. A pen to paper is personal and real. Receiving a hand written letter is a clear indication that the sender actually wrote the letter not another on that persons behalf. It is that little extra effort that I think many people lack nowadays as we are so busy and have so many daily tasks to fulfil. I completely share your feelings on the matter.

24 Aug 2012Hey Mellissah, I really like the way you refer to a hand written letter as something "special" and certainly agree with this. When a client receives a hand written letter, it appears to be more personal and allows the client to feel more important - as time as been consumed to write them this personal note. This really is a great personal touch!
