My Experience As A Marketing Intern At Marketing Eye
“Marketing’s job is never done. It is about perpetual motion. We must continue to innovate every day.”
It’s common knowledge that internships are an essential rite of passage for any professional looking to go somewhere in their career. Most students understand the value of getting into a good internship program and its benefit towards understanding where your interests lie and securing your dream role.
For me, 2020 was a time of reflection, where I understood that marketing is important for any business if they want to survive in the current climate. After a quick LinkedIn search, I came across Marketing Eye’s 3-month marketing internship program. While I didn’t fully understand the role, I knew it would be helpful for expanding my knowledge especially in digital marketing. That was my motivation, So, I decided to apply.
I got accepted into the internship program in February 2021. To me, a “marketing intern” was a student running errands, filing papers, and completing admin work at the office. However, this was far from that. My Marketing Eye experience was full of learning and key takeaways. What I came for was digital marketing, what I left with was so much more - a new, deeper insight into the industry as a whole.
During the internship, I never felt any less than a valuable addition to the agency. The marketing executives and consultants didn’t give me work just to keep me busy, rather I actually produced something meaningful. I wrote blogs, helped with SEO, prepared social media calendars, and was involved in preparing effective marketing strategies. But most importantly, I learned way more than I ever thought I would. I always knew marketing was important, but the internship showed me how exactly effective marketing can benefit a brand.
To me, marketing was simply posting daily on social media or getting more traffic to your website. Turns out, marketing is way more than that. Marketing serves as a medium for your target audience to know about your business in ways that they otherwise wouldn’t have known. It provides a way for businesses to build and nurture relationships. Furthermore, gaining impactful engagement not only affects reach and views but also drives actual sales. Today, these marketing tactics revolve around two-way communication, which I have learned through content creation such as blogs and using social media.
As a media and communications student, I believed my strength was content writing. But fortunately for me, the program provided a lot of constructive criticism that helped take my writing to the next level. As a result, I’ve become more aware of the importance of modifying how you communicate based on who you’re communicating with. I am writing for the customer and not for myself, and how a company portrays itself in its content is pivotal to being a leader in its area of specialisation.
All in all, I have grown as a marketer. Not only did I become more proficient in content and social media marketing, but I have also gained valuable professional experience through working in this fast-paced agency and interacting with talented co-workers. The team at Marketing Eye definitely gave me the support and exposure that I needed.
Now it's onwards and upwards from here!
