How being a mum has helped my marketing career
I have two children aged 5 and 3, they are hilarious, cheeky and full of energy. In the last five years there are many things I’ve sacrificed for my kids; my time, my money, my energy but not my career. In fact, I think having kids has really given me some keys skills that have made me a better employee, manager and team member.
Firstly, time management; when you become a mum you suddenly have a lot to juggle; dishes, dinner, school drop offs, homework, mountains of washing and loads of cleaning yet you seem to just become more organised. It becomes almost second nature to think about what’s on this day, week or month and what you need to do to prepare for it. I’ve become a scheduling ninja, more efficient, organised and focused than ever before.
You learn to do things quickly and effectively (usually when the kids are sleeping) and that translates into the workplace. You definitely become more effective at using the time you have efficiently and in the best possible way.
You’re more empathetic, supportive and caring towards others and I feel that makes me a relatable manager. I’m understanding towards other staff members and feel a genuine concern for their well-being.
I’m more passionate about my career, I’ve always been career driven but now more than ever I strive to achieve my career goals as I have a little team of supporters following me and watching everything I do. I have really got to do it well.
Like it or not parenthood changes you but that’s not always a bad thing, sometimes the changes it makes in you make you a better worker, employee and all-round better person.
